In this part of Paris, the Invalid area, everything is on a monumental scale. Explore the luxurious avenues and enjoy one of the most amazing sightseeing of Paris on the second floor of the Eiffel Tower !
In this part of Paris, the Invalid area, everything is on a monumental scale. Starting from the sprawling 18th-century building of the Ecole Militaire on the corner of the Avenue de la Motte Piquet, the Parc du Champ de Mars stretches down to the Eiffel Tower and the Seine. The avenues around the Eiffel Tower are lined with luxurious buildings, some in the Art Nouveau Style, others in the Haussmann Style. Numerous embassies are situated here. The area was already highly prized between the World Wars when the noted actor Sacha Guitry lived there. Even earlier, during the 18th century, wealthy residents of the Marais mensions moved to this part of the city, building the aristocratic town houses that line the Rue de Varenne and Rue de Grenelle.
The Eiffel Tower : We are very proud of the Lady who was completed 100 years in 1989. Every night she puts on her dazzling lace dress and shines all over Paris with her 1,040 foot height and her 7,000 tons of iron.
Enter the hydraulic lift and stop at the first floor to watch the movie recalling the story of the tower. 2nd floor, take a walk around the platform from which you can see the different sights of the capital. 3rd floor, (902 feet) remarkable extensive view all over Paris and its outskirts.
The Invalides : Once a monarchic military institution, this monumental 17th century building is impressive by its size and its majesty. The army museum is located there. The dome church houses Napoleon's red porphyry sarcophagus and his son's tomb.
V2 The «Petit Trianon» in Versailles
Afternoon 13:30 - 18:00
Rate: 86.00€ / person (based on 15 pax)Take the opportunity to visit the newly nenovated Petit Trianon in Versailles !
Madame de Pompadour's Creation
As a child, Louis XV used to say, 'I do so like the Trianon'. He was referring, of course, to the Grand Trianon. In the 1750s, Madame de Pompadour brought him back to the spot. The king liked to stroll with her to the new menagerie, through the botanical gardens, and the greenhouses that the famous scientist Bernard de Jussieu had just installed. On returning from these promenades, the king would stop in the new pavilion built in the middle of the formal garden, where he would file his herbals or have a light refreshment of milk and strawberries, or sup in the cool salon. Starting in 1763, he succumbed to the arguments of Madame de Pompadour and her brother, Marigny, and ordered that a new chateau be built?the Petit Trianon. It was completed in 1768.
The Trianon gardens
The garden surrounding the Petit Trianon, of which the hameau de la Reine is an extension, began its transformation from formal pattern gardens to an informal "natural" garden of winding paths, curving canals and lakes in 1774, under the direction of Antoine Richard, gardener to the Queen. Richard Mique modified the landscape plan to provide vistas of lawn to west and north of the Petit Trianon, encircled by belts of trees. Beyond the lake to the north, the hameau was sited like a garden stage set, initially inspired in its grouping and vernacular building by Dutch and Flemish genre paintings, philosophically influenced by Rousseau's cult of "nature", and reflecting exactly contemporary picturesque garden principles set forth by Claude-Henri Watelet and by ideas of the philosophes, their "radical notions coopted into innocent forms of pleasure and ingenious decoration" as William Adams has pointed out.
