IQUAM was established as EQUAM in 1992 for the purpose of addressing the safety issue in the use of silicone gel and other filling material in plastic surgery. In the last years, additional issues within the framework of advanced technological devices have been discussed at biennial meetings. The organization was founded by a group of plastic surgeons headed by Drs. Marita Eisenmann-Klein of Germany and Jean-Philippe Nicolai of the Netherlands, and now comprises over 40 European, Central and South American, African, Southeast Asian and Middle-Eastern countries. Representatives participating at meetings are plastic surgeons, scientists, manufacturers and delegates from governmental bodies involved in the development and surveillance of advanced technologies, devices and techniques in the field of plastic surgery. Consensus Conferences are held biennially in a non-formal setting.
